National Benchmark Tests
NBT preparation,in person or online
Prepare for the National Benchmark Tests with live tutoring in reading, quantitative reasoning and mathematics. Meet in person in Cape Town and surrounding areas, or online anywhere in South Africa.
Academic literacy
Read the passage closely
Practise identifying the main point, following an argument and drawing conclusions from the text. Discuss why an answer fits the evidence and where you misunderstood a question.
Quantitative literacy
Make sense of the numbers
Work through information presented in graphs, tables and written problems. Practise interpreting quantities and choosing the calculations needed to answer the question.
Mathematics
Work through the mathematics
Bring the concepts or methods you find difficult. Your tutor can explain a step, help you identify an error and work through a similar question with you.
Practice and feedback
Practise, then review your answers
Try relevant practice questions under time, then discuss your approach with your tutor. Use mistakes and unanswered questions to decide what needs more practice.
The tests
Know what you’re preparing for.
The NBTs include Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) and Mathematics (MAT). Academic literacy and quantitative literacy are assessed together in AQL; MAT is a separate test.
AQL
Support with understanding texts, following arguments and interpreting quantitative information.
MAT
Support with mathematical concepts, calculations and the reasoning behind your approach.
Your application
Confirm the tests and deadlines required by your intended institution and programme. Share those details when you enquire.
Before you enquire
A few useful answers.
What are AQL and MAT?
AQL is the Academic and Quantitative Literacy test. It combines academic literacy and quantitative literacy in one test. MAT is the separate Mathematics test. Check which tests your intended institution and programme require.
How do I know which tests to prepare for?
Check the current requirements for the programme you are applying to with the institution. Tell us which tests you plan to write so we can discuss suitable tutoring support.
What should I bring to a lesson?
Bring any practice questions you have attempted and explain where you got stuck. Official NBT exemplar questions can help you become familiar with the kinds of questions asked. Share your planned test date too.
When should I start preparing?
Enquire once you know you need support. Starting earlier leaves time to revisit concepts and practise between lessons. If your test is soon, share the date and your available times so we can check a tutor match.
Are these live lessons?
Yes. You work with a tutor during the lesson and can ask questions as you go. Tell us whether you need help with AQL, MAT or both.
Does tutoring include NBT registration?
No. Register separately through the official NBT website and check your institution’s deadlines and requirements. Booking tutoring does not book a test.
Where can I meet a tutor in person?
Share your location in Cape Town or the surrounding service areas. We confirm tutor availability, a meeting place and travel arrangements before booking.
Can I prepare online from outside Cape Town?
Yes. Online tutoring is available across South Africa. Choose Online when enquiring, or Either if both lesson formats work for you.
